LAUREN – CASE STUDY

LAUREN CASE STUDY

Diagnosed with a physical condition which affected her mental health. Attending sixth form and loves sport. Ready to plan her future.

MENTORED BY MEL

Background
Lauren has Dystonia, a disorder that has had a significant impact on her life. She has struggled with being unable to do the things she once enjoyed, which has caused her considerable distress and frustration. The condition has also affected her mental health and education. With limited support available from the NHS to help her cope with the challenges and trauma of her condition, her school referred her to the Life Chance Trust.

Mentoring
Lauren and her mentor, Mel, met regularly in local cafes where they spent their sessions talking and problem-solving together. Much of their focus was on managing her physical condition and talking openly to others, while also encouraging her to re-engage with sports she was able to participate in. Lauren shared that it was very helpful to have someone to talk to outside of her parents, as she no longer felt the need to bottle up her feelings. During this time, she also secured a part-time job and was excited about earning her own money to save for future travel. Alongside this, she and Mel discussed her education and explored different universities she might like to apply to in the future.

"Life Chance Trust has enabled me to talk freely about my problems in a judgement free setting to help me think clearly and make the best decisions".

Where are they now
”My mentor has helped my apply for paid work, attend sixth form and supported me with relationships. Having a space to talk about my problems has really helped with my wellbeing. I feel better equipped to deal with my problems and I feel more comfortable seeking trust in others to talk. Overall, I feel happier in myself."
