Background
L was excluded from mainstream education in year 10 and then attended a specialist provision in Exeter. She witnessed domestic abuse against her Mum throughout her childhood and experienced Mum’s substance and alcohol misuse. L regularly experiences verbal and emotional abuse from younger brother and she has experienced breakdowns in her peer relationships.
“I feel so much happier now and settled because I am earning my own money. This means I can support my Mum as well as myself. Thank-you for helping me find a job, and just being friendly!”
Mentoring
The first session with L was spent chatting and identifying her goals. She was very open and honest, and had no problems talking to someone she hadn’t met before. She was coming to the end of year 11 and completing her exams. She didn’t know what to do next. She showed an interest in beauty and animals so together they explored options. L applied to South Devon College, however was still not sure the environment would be a good fit for her. She attended the taster day and loved it! Come September, L started her course, however it became apparent very quickly that the scale of the college and the people who were on her course, was not going to be a good fit for her. She decided to drop out and get a full time job, with the help of her mentor.
Where are they now?
L is now working 2 jobs to add to a full time job. She worries a lot about financially supporting her Mum, so working and earning money was very important for her. Being a very warm, sociable person, it was easy for her to find a job, with the support from her mentor. Together they completed her CV, applied for jobs and prepared for interviews. She has the vision to get more qualifications in the future and go back to education, but wants to make sure it is something she will enjoy, in an environment she feels safe.
