L – CASE STUDY

L CASE STUDY

21 year old boy, tier 3 with complex needs. Sofa surfing and soon to be homeless.

MENTORED BY CHLOE

Background
Referred by his adopted Mum, she found she had tried all agencies to help her son, but none had worked. L was adopted when he was 18 months old.

He had a violent start in life. He then moved into foster care age 11 due to complex behaviours, and from there, stayed with various foster placements. He has lived in a number of support living placements, leaving his last one in June 2024 due to feeling unsafe. Since then, he has been sofa surfing, sleeping on a sofa which was flea infested, and being financially abused.

L has always struggled with anxiety, and finds talking to new people overwhelming. He wants to get a job, but his low confidence and self-esteem has been a barrier.

Mentoring
Life Chance Trust got straight to supporting L with housing. Within the first week of working together, L and his mentor attended a meeting with Young Devon to discuss housing options. The week after, L had moved into temporary accommodation whilst a longer term plan could be arranged. His mentor spent a lot of time on the phone to various people, to ensure accommodation was being sorted weekly. His mentor helped him move a number of times from different temporary placements. Also supporting L’s current relationships, his mentor helped bridge that gap between him and his PA, as well as his Mum. L felt alone a lot of the time, so it was important to try and build a supportive team around him.

Still currently waiting for a more permanent placement for L, the goal when he is settled is to find him a job. L has big dreams of being able to drive one day, so a job will help him work towards this.

“In just 2 sessions with L, we had achieved so much with getting him somewhere to live and off of someones sofa. The first night he had in a bed, he said he’d never slept so well. He has so much potential and once he has someone settled to live, I think he will achieve a lot!”
