KEL CASE STUDY

Love of cats, music and art. Looking to go to University to study Psychology.

MENTORED
BY GEORGIA

Background
Kel was adopted at the age of three and brought to the UK. Throughout her upbringing, her relationship with her adoptive mother was strained.

During her time at school, concerns raised by a neighbour led to social services becoming involved, and Kel temporarily living with the neighbour. Unfortunately, her relationship with her mother did not recover following this period. Kel found the ongoing conflict at home difficult and was working towards progressing to university.

She shared that her past experiences continued to impact her day-to-day life, presenting ongoing challenges. Kel also had a history of self-harm and suicidal thoughts. She sought support to better understand and manage her thoughts and feelings, prepare for the transition to university, and develop effective strategies for coping with stress.

Mentoring

As Kel began university, she was matched with a mentor who was also a student.

Georgia supported her with settling in, navigating campus, and accessing available services.

Keen to find a part-time job, Kel created a CV, with Georgia offering guidance and signposting her to university support services for further help.

Kel faced some challenges with flatmates, and having someone to talk to helped her reflect and set healthy boundaries. An important anniversary was also approaching, linked to a past episode of self-harm. Georgia supported Kel in reframing this, helping her recognise the progress she had made.

Overall, having Georgia’s support during her first three months made the transition to university smoother and more manageable.

Where are they now?
Kel is still at university and is really enjoying her course. She has adapted well to living independently, with support from her mentor in securing a job and managing her finances.

Kel has also taken steps to reconnect with her mother, with the aim of rebuilding their relationship.

She is keen to remain involved with the charity and is looking forward to joining future activities to stay connected.
