K CASE STUDY

Recently started college, needing support with life skills and getting out the house. Creative, loves Disney and talking to people.

MENTORED
BY MEL

Background
Having recently finished at a specialist provision, K was starting South Devon College. Having experienced trauma at a young age, K and her Mum were very reliant on each other. The main goal for K was to get out more independently, engaging with the community.

Mentoring
K spent time with 2 different mentors, starting with someone she already knew to help her feel comfortable. Mel was then introduced with both mentors attending, to help K feel less anxious. Continuing her mentoring journey with Mel, K and Mel quickly built a relationship and K really enjoyed her time with her. They started sessions in a local cafe that K was used to.

Each week Mel gave K space to talk about worries and positives from starting college, problem solving together. After a few sessions, Mel started to suggest different places they could visit and different things they could do. K, with the support from Mel, started to experience new places in the area that she could then also visit with family. We also supported with ID for K as she was unable to access a provisional licence.

“My daughter really liked Mel and enjoyed her time with her. Life Chance Trust supported us as a family, not just her. We are verythankful”.

Where are they now?
K is thoroughly enjoying college. After problem solving some issues with Mel, she feels confident what she needs to do when they arise again. She feels more confident in her local area, visiting more than just the 1 cafe. Still now K will message Mel with updates, including pictures of her new therapy cat!
