IEUAN CASE STUDY

16 year old, NEET and looking to broaden social horizons and career options

MENTORED
BY ROSINA AND CATHIE

Background
Ieuan joined Life Chance Trust after a difficult time in his life which resulted in him experiencing depression and severe social anxiety. Bullying at school had left him with PTSD, school avoidance and not taking his year 11 exams. Waiting for an assessment of ASD and ADHD, Ieuan’s passion for being outdoors and active, coupled with previous educational experiences, meant that he was struggling to find suitable next steps in training and education.

Mentoring
Ieuan loves the outdoors so he started meeting Rosina in Stover Country park where they went for long walks, exploring the park and often getting lost!

With Rosina, Ieuan set the goals of getting his Maths and English qualifications and exploring outdoor education apprenticeships. When Rosina had to step away from mentoring for a time due to some personal challenges, Cathie stepped in and continued to help Ieuan towards his goals. One mentoring session at Goodrington saw Ieuan approach Reach Outdoors about gaining an apprenticeship. Although they weren’t currently taking on apprentices, they were impressed with Ieuan’s initiative and offered him summer work which will boost his CV and gain some valuable experience. Cathie and Ieuan also visited the employability hub in Newton Abbot and Ieuan is now looking forward to completing his maths and English through Learn Direct. Their final session, they played crazy golf at Paignton seafront.

Where are they now?
Ieuan is currently working at Reach Outdoors for the Summer season, has booked to complete his maths and English in September and has now also completed his autism and ADHD assessments.

He has joined a kayaking club where he has been

honing his skills on the water and is now looking to start canoeing. He is also looking at joining Life Chance Trust for more activities further expanding his social circle and join our first residential.
