Background
E struggles with social interactions but was eager to become more independent. She was open to trying any suggestions offered to her, though she needed support to build her confidence. Her anxiety often stood in the way. Diagnosed with autism, she faced significant challenges during childhood.

One of the biggest obstacles was using public transport, which she found particularly difficult. However, overcoming this would greatly expand her access to employment opportunities.

“My mentor was extremely kind, supportive and understanding and was always willing to adapt to my needs. Thank you.”

Mentoring
The beginning of E’s mentoring programme focused on small, manageable steps, such as walking around her local town.

Each activity was planned the week before to help ease E’s anxiety. As she was used to visiting the same café, her mentor introduced her to new places to gradually build her confidence. They had in-depth conversations about coping strategies and practical techniques E could use to manage her anxiety.

E was particularly motivated to improve her use of public transport, so they dedicated a few sessions to practicing bus journeys together.

Where are they now?
By week 12, E had identified new places where she felt comfortable and safe. She was coping better with change and was able to adjust plans at short notice when necessary.

E and her mentor reflected on the personal growth she had experienced, noting that the mentoring programme had provided a valuable sense of consistency.

She completed the programme equipped with practical tools and strategies to help her adapt to different situations.
