Background
With a recent diagnosis, Charlly wanted some support with life skills and social skills.
Charlly had battled depression and selfharm, which stemmed from difficult situations she had faced in the past. Now feeling like this was being managed, she was keen to keep working on herself.
Mentoring
Charlly said from the beginning that getting public transport was difficult for her, especially independently. Emetophobia was something Charlly had experienced all her life and it was her biggest barrier to feeling calm on the bus. Charlly and her mentor spent each session, taking a small step towards being independent. They started by building a relationship, walking the seafront.
When Charlly felt more comfortable with her mentor, they got on a bus together to the next town. They discussed distractor techniques and coping strategies, music and headphones being the biggest help. They then travelled further, then her mentor would sit upstairs, to eventually Charlly getting the bus on her own and her mentor driving behind and meeting her the other end.
Eventually, her mentor was able to set her the task of getting the bus completely independently in between sessions.
“I got support with public transport! I was unable to even set foot on public transport alone or with people, but I am now!
Life Chance Trust is a kind and caring system with lovely people. It’s been a helpful and genuinely life changing journey. It meant a lot to get the support I needed without being made fun of, or put down for struggling. Thank-you for helping me and my journey in life”.
