BY CLAIRE
Background
Referred by her social worker, C had experienced a great deal of trauma and challenges in her life, culminating in her younger sisters being taken into care. She was struggling with her mental and physical health and was self medicating with drugs and alcohol.
“Having a mentor meant I was able to keep focused. She kept reminding me what I wanted long term, and stopping drugs was my main goal”.
Mentoring
Mentoring sessions often involved hot chocolate or McDonalds. Our primary focus was getting C into college and making a plan for C to access the healthcare she needs.
Working closely with C’s team, social worker, drugs worker and college to support and encourage, C was able to make a lot of changes for herself. C worked really hard on managing her drug use and we were able to compete a comprehensive mental health review and attend an appointment with CAMHS who agreed to refer her for trauma therapy.
C started at college and was highly motivated to make changes for herself, and things became much more settled.
Where are they now?
C is waiting for her CAMHS support and is engaging with various health appointments. College didn’t work out but she has been offered a job to start in the summer. She has continued with not using drugs and is keen to stay clean.
