A CASE STUDY

18 year old who barely left the house. His mental health and anger was a barrier for him. Hopes for a future working with cars.

MENTORED BY GUY

Background
A left school half way through year 11. He struggled with his mental health and anger, witnessing a lot of domestic violence growing up. He wanted support with his confidence to help him move forward in life.

Having smoked cannabis most evenings, he really wanted to stop. He used this to help with stress and anger. Getting out of the house was also hard for him, and living in a remote area made it even more difficult.

Mentoring
A quickly opened up to his mentor about the hard time he had at school and early childhood. He felt he had not had a lot of help through school and got in with the wrong crowd.

A and his mentor, Guy, spent time in cafes and going for walks. They explored different things he could do in the area, and Guy even supported him reaching out to old friends. They started researching different jobs he could do, using people he knows as a good way in.

Giving A the opportunity to get out the house and talking to someone different to bounce ideas with, made a big difference to him. He found after just 3 sessions, his head space was better, giving his the room to consider next steps.

“Seeing A’s mental health improve over a short period, shows how important it is for young people to just have someone to talk to”.

Where Are They Now?
Gradually, A used less cannabis and feels this is due to getting out the house more. He is interacting with friends a lot more which is helping build his confidence. A also independently organised some work experience working with cars.
